The field of counseling is HUGE, and every year there are opportunities to grow my skillset in order to serve my clients better! I'm not done growing and learning.
At Made Well Counseling Services, we want you to feel comfortable, supported, and understood from the moment you reach out.
Your First Session
Your first session is all about building a connection and determining if we’re a good fit. It’s crucial that you feel comfortable and understood, and if at any point you feel we’re not the right match, we’ll gladly help connect you with someone who is. Expect a welcoming environment focused on understanding your needs and goals.
The first session is what we call assessment and intake. This is simply a conversation to learn about what’s bringing you to therapy and how we can best support you. Together, we’ll explore your concerns, background, and hopes for therapy. This often includes setting initial goals and discussing a plan to help you move forward.
Common Concerns About Starting Therapy
“What if I don’t know what to say?” That’s okay! Your therapist will guide the conversation at a pace that feels right for you.
“How long does therapy take?” Every person’s journey is unique. Some find relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. The average sessions lasts 45-60 minutes.
“Will I be judged?” Absolutely not. Therapy is a judgment-free zone where you are accepted just as you are.
My private pay rates are as follows:
$80 per hour for individual therapy (intake as well)
$120 for couples therapy intake (one time)
$100 per hour for couples therapy
As stated elsewhere, opting for private pay is often more affordable if you have a high deductible insurance plan.
As you consider the cost of mental health services, think of the cost we pay regularly for restaurants, haircuts, or other services. Even more, consider the average divorce costs $7,000 (forbes.com). That would amount to 70 sessions of couples therapy! The average wedding cost is nearly $30,000 (cnn.com) as of 2023. The cost of therapy in comparison is minor.
I understand completely how every dollar counts with bills to pay, mouths to feed, and retirement accounts to fund. However, I would like you to consider your mental health and your relationships as something worthy of your investment.
As of Spring 2025, I am credentialed with:
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee

If you're not sure, call the number on your insurance card to determine if we're in network.
I initially set out to provide services on a fee for service basis without utilizing insurance companies. This decision was made for a number of reasons; ultimately, insurance companies get to dictate the work that therapists do as well as require a diagnosis that could stick with a person for life. They also get to set fees for therapists, negating years of experience, training, and autonomy.
In the Fall of '24 I decided to add accepting insurance onto my practice in order to increase accessibility and affordability. Private pay is still an option and I'm happy to work with you to find a way to meet your needs, but I'm equally happy to help you utilize your insurance benefits so that you can access the help you need.

The point of "Made Well" (and any professional counselor) is to accept you as you are and help you get where you need to go. I've worked with atheists, agnostics, believers, Christians, seekers, ministry leaders, question-askers, those wounded by churches, and everything in-between.
My training is in Clinical Mental Health and so that is my primary approach. However, with my background in ministry I love to help clients explore their spiritual struggles and concerns. As a matter of fact, one's spiritual journey is often entangled with their mental and emotional journey.
The point: let me know what you need.
I do not have the training or expertise to prescribe medication. That is a personal decision you and your doctor make after much consideration. I'd be happy to refer you to a/your doctor or to a nearby psychiatrist who might be able to meet that need if necessary.

One of the biggest reasons is that if your insurance plan has a high deductible, opting for private pay may actually be cheaper than the rate the insurance company has determined the cost for therapy to be.
There are a number of reasons why I believe private pay is often the better option for both the client and the provider. Here are a few:
Confidentiality and Privacy: Private pay ensures confidentiality and privacy for the client, as there is no involvement of insurance companies. This means that sensitive information discussed during sessions remains strictly between the client and the counselor, without the need for diagnoses or treatment plans to be shared with third parties.
Flexibility and Choice: Private pay allows both the client and the counselor to have more flexibility and autonomy in determining the frequency and duration of sessions, as well as the focus of the therapy. There's no need to adhere to insurance company guidelines or limitations, enabling a more personalized approach to treatment.
Quality of Care: Without the constraints imposed by insurance companies, counselors can focus solely on providing the highest quality of care tailored to the client's individual needs. This means longer session times, more innovative therapeutic techniques, and a deeper level of engagement in the therapeutic process.
No Diagnosis Required: Private pay eliminates the need for clients to receive a formal diagnosis in order to access counseling services. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who may be hesitant to seek help due to stigma associated with mental health labels.
Continuity of Care: Private pay fosters a stronger therapeutic relationship between the client and the counselor, as there are no interruptions or changes in treatment due to insurance coverage limitations or provider networks. This continuity of care enhances the effectiveness of the counseling process and promotes better long-term outcomes.
Reduced Administrative Burden: For counselors, private pay reduces the administrative burden associated with insurance billing, pre-authorizations, and claim submissions. This allows counselors to devote more time and energy to providing direct care to clients, ultimately enhancing the overall therapeutic experience.
Yes! Research shows that therapy is highly effective. Studies indicate that 75% of people who engage in therapy experience meaningful improvement in their mental health. It provides a safe and non-judgmental space to gain insight, develop coping strategies, and work toward lasting change.
